On a weight loss journey? Or just trying to stay in shape? You might be surprised to find out which healthy foods are slowing down your metabolism.

White Flour

White flour foods generally have lower nutrient levels compared to whole wheat options. This is because white flour is processed to rid of good nutrients, such as antioxidants and fiber. The very little fiber that white flour possesses slows down your body's digestive process, and ultimately metabolism. Although there’s nothing wrong with occasionally indulging in white flour pastas, pastries and bread, it’s best to stick to whole wheat options on a daily basis.

Non-organic produce

You’d think that all fruits and vegetables are good for weight management or can help in your weight loss journey. That’s not always the case. Non-organic produce contains pesticides that decrease the speed of metabolism by blocking the pathway to your thyroid - the gland that regulates your metabolism. More grocery stores are providing organic options for everyday shoppers. So if you can, try buying organic produce.

Farmed beef

Conventionally farmed animals are often treated with antibiotics. These antibiotics can have a negative impact on the good bacteria in our gut. The change that non-organically farmed meat causes to our gut increases our chances of weight gain. The alternative to eating treated meat is to opt-in for grass-fed products.

Alcohol in excess

Alcohol has been labeled as one of the worst consumable products for your metabolism. Although alcoholic beverages do halt your body's absorption and digestion of other nutrients, the process is rather quick. If you’re having drinks in excess, that’s when your metabolism takes a hit. So, It’s okay to have drinks in moderation, but be wary as it takes priority over other foods in your digestion tract.

More and more research is coming out about foods that were once deemed as healthy. If you’re looking to lose weight, be sure to do your own research on what foods affect your metabolism
